Chapter 13 Casey

Dashiell didn’t acknowledge him as he slipped from Miranda’s office through the door into the lounge, so Casey didn’t say anything to him either. He was supposed to be keeping a low profile. Any entanglement with law enforcement could lead to his parole being revoked, or at least to a night in jail. And he’d already spent enough nights in jail.

Being behind the security door felt safer. When he’d run into the cops in the lobby, he’d almost run straight back out again. But they were there to take Finn away, and he couldn’t allow that. He couldn’t prevent it either, so he’d done the only thing he could think of to do, which was call Dashiell.

The lounge was really quiet. Not empty, but quiet. A dozen curious faces turned in his direction.

“What’s going on out there?” Tish asked.

“Tish is just being nosy,” one of the other kids teased, a tall older boy Casey didn’t know the name of.

“Oh, like you didn’t have your ear pressed against the door right before Casey opened it,” Tish joked back. “We’re all being nosy.”

“Are we being raided?” the tall boy asked.

Did LGBT centers get raided? They weren’t illegal, were they? Casey didn’t think so. If they were, Dashiell would’ve told him not to be there at all. “I don’t think we’re being raided,” he said.

“It’s me, isn’t it?” Finn was up on the ladder Casey had left in place because he’d only been running out to his car for a minute. Casey didn’t answer, but Finn took his silence for what it was. “Oh, man! Are my parents out there? Tell me my mom’s not crying in the lobby.”

“Your mom’s not crying in the lobby, but yeah, it’s you.” Maybe he wasn’t supposed to say, but he figured it was Finn’s life. He had a right to know what was going on in it. “Some cops came to bring you home.”

“Well, I don’t want to go.” Finn jumped down from the ladder without bothering to use any of the rungs, landing with a heavy thud. He stormed into the dorm and slammed the door behind him.

“I don’t want you to go either,” Casey told the closed door.

“He’s not mad at you,” Tish said. “He’s just scared.”

“I know.” Sometimes scared came out easier as angry. Angry made MJ back down, made his father proud. Scared was like wearing a sign that said “kick me” on your back.

“Want me to go sit with him?” Tish asked. “He’d probably rather you did.”

Casey didn’t know what good sitting would do and he didn’t have the skills to do much else. He couldn’t be Finn’s lawyer or summon CPS, not anything helpful, but he knocked at the door and went in when Finn said he could.

He was up on the top bunk, of course, lying on his back and looking up at the ceiling.

Casey climbed up to the top bed on the other bunk, giving his head a good whack on the ceiling as he got himself arranged.
